The First Sunday After The Epiphany

A Service of Holy Baptism

Liturgy of the Word

Prelude “Come, Holy Spirit” The prelude helps us to focus on where we are and why we are here. Quiet, meditative mood is encouraged, prayerfully expelling mental distractions.

Processional Hymn All stand. The people of God sang as they approached the Temple for worship. The procession helps us remember that coming into the presence of God is an extraordinarily special privilege.
During this hymn, the younger children are dismissed to attend Children’s Chapel.

Opening Acclamation Call to worship, to purposefully enter God’s nearer presence.

First Reading Genesis 1:1-5  (ESV)

     1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

     And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

Reader:           The word of the Lord.
People             Thanks be to God.

Psalm 29    (ESV)

1 Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings,
    ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
    worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness.

3 The voice of the Lord is over the waters;
    the God of glory thunders,
    the Lord, over many waters.
4 The voice of the Lord is powerful;
    the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.

5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
    the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon.
He makes Lebanon to skip like a calf,
    and Sirion like a young wild ox.

The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire.
8 The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;
    the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

9 The voice of the Lord makes the deer give birth
    and strips the forests bare,
    and in his temple all cry, “Glory!”

10 The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;
    the Lord sits enthroned as king forever.
11 May the Lord give strength to his people!
    May the Lord bless his people with peace!

Second Reading   Acts 19:1-7  (ESV)

    1 And it happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the inland country and came to Ephesus. There he found some disciplesAnd he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” 3 And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into John's baptism.” And Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.” 5 On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying. There were about twelve men in all.

Reader:           The word of the Lord.
People:            Thanks be to God.

(Sing the first 3 stanzas)

Reader:           The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark.
People:            Glory to You, Lord Christ.

Gospel Reading Mark 1:4-11 (ESV)

     John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel's hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey. 7 And he preached, saying, “After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. 8 I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

     9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased. “

Reader:           The Gospel of the Lord.
People:            Praise to You, Lord Christ.

Prayers for the Candidate

The Celebrant then says to the congregation

Let us now pray for Alex and Tyler, who are to receive the Sacrament of new birth.

A Person appointed leads the following petitions

People             Lord, hear our prayer.

The Celebrant says

Grant, O Lord, that all who are baptized into the death of Jesus Christ Your Son may live in the power of His resurrection and look for Him to come again in glory; who lives and reigns now and for ever. Amen.

Thanksgiving over the Water

The Celebrant blesses the water, first saying

            The Lord be with you.
People             And also with you.

Celebrant        Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People             It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

Celebrant

We thank You, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it You led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it Your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through His death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life.

We thank You, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in His death. By it we share in His resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to Your Son, we bring into fellowship those who come to Him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

At the following words, the Celebrant touches the water

Now sanctify this water, we pray You, by the power of Your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue forever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior.

To Him, to You, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and forever. Amen.

The Baptism

The candidates are presented by name to the Celebrant, or to an assisting priest or deacon, who then immerses, or pours water upon, the candidates, saying

Alex and Tyler, I baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

When this action has been completed, the Bishop or Priest, at a place in full sight of the congregation, prays over him, saying

Let us pray.

Heavenly Father, we thank You that by water and the Holy Spirit You have bestowed upon Your servants the forgiveness of sin, and have raised them to the new life of grace. Sustain them, O Lord, in Your Holy Spirit. Give them an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage and will to persevere, a spirit to know and to love You, and the gift of joy and wonder in all Your works. Amen.

Then the Priest places a hand on the person’s head, marking on the forehead the sign of the cross and saying

Alex and Tyler, you are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ’s own for ever. Amen.

Or this action may be done immediately after the administration of the water and before the preceding prayer.

When the candidates have been baptized, the Celebrant says

Let us welcome the newly baptized.

Celebrant and People

We receive you into the household of God. Confess the faith of Christ crucified, proclaim His resurrection, and share with us in His eternal priesthood.

Passing of the Peace  We greet one another and seek out anyone present with whom we are at odds with before coming to Holy Communion.

Celebrant      The Peace of the Lord be always with you.
People          And also with you.

Doxology Celebratory praise is appropriate for the ability God provides us and the privilege of joining Him in His work.

Praise God from Whom all blessings flow.
Praise Him all creatures here below.
Praise Him above, Ye heavenly Host.
Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Birthday Prayer (when needed): (Come to the altar rail after the ushers bring forward the alms basins).

Many happy returns of the day of thy birth, and may seasons of joy be given, and may the dear Father prepare thee on earth for a glorious birthday in heaven. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving At the Last Supper, Jesus commanded His disciples to remember Him in this fellowship “meal.” People baptized in the Trinitarian form who discern the presence of Jesus in the Bread and the Wine are welcome to receive Holy Communion. A gluten free wafer is available upon request.

The people stand or kneel.

Eucharistic Prayer A

The people remain standing. The Celebrant, faces them and says

                        The Lord be with you.
People             And also with you.

Celebrant        Lift up your hearts.
People             We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant        Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People             It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

Then, facing the Holy Table, the Celebrant proceeds

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to You, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Here a Proper Preface is said on all Sundays, and on other occasions as appointed.

Therefore we praise You, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who forever say this hymn to proclaim the glory of Your Name:

Celebrant and People

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
Heaven and earth are full of Your glory.
            Hosanna in the highest .
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.
            Hosanna in the highest.

Then the Celebrant continues

Holy and gracious Father: In Your infinite love You made us for Yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, You, in Your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, Your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to You, the God and Father of all. He stretched out His arms upon the cross, and offered Himself, in obedience to Your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.

On the night He was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when He had given thanks to You, He broke it, and gave it to His disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for You. Do this for the remembrance of Me.”

After supper He took the cup of wine; and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of Me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.

The Celebrant continues

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling His death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer You these gifts.

Sanctify them by Your Holy Spirit to be for Your people the Body and Blood of Your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in Him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve You in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all Your saints into the joy of Your eternal kingdom.

Spiritual Communion (said by all)

O Most blessed Savior,
in union with the faithful at every altar of Your Church
where Your blessed Body and Blood are being offered to the Father,
I desire to offer You praise and thanksgiving,
I present to You my soul and body with the earnest wish that I may
always be united to You.

I believe that You are truly present in the Holy Sacrament.
And since I cannot now receive You sacramentally into my heart;
I unite myself to You and embrace You with all the affections of my soul.
Let me never be separated from You.
Let me live and die in Your love. Amen.

Come, Lord Jesus, and dwell in the fulness of Your strength,
in the perfection of Your ways, and in the holiness of Your Spirit,
and rule over every hostile power within me in the might of Your Spirit,
and to the glory of Your Father. Amen.

Blessed, praised, and adored be Jesus Christ on His throne of glory in
Heaven, and in the most Holy Sacrament of the Altar. Amen.

The Celebrant continues

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By Him, and with Him, and in Him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is Yours,
Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

People and Celebrant:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread

The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread.  A period of silence is kept.

Celebrant: Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;
People:     Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

Celebrant:

The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on Him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

Blessed are those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb.

The Bread and the Cup are administered with these or similar words

The Body of Christ, the bread of heaven. [Amen.]
The Blood of Christ, the cup of salvation. [Amen.]

When you come forward for communion if you would like the consecrated
wafer only, please stay in the center of the aisle and Fr. Andy will give you the wafer only.  If you prefer to receive the wafer dipped in the chalice of consecrated wine, please go to the right or left of Fr. Andy to receive the wafer dipped in wine.

Hymns & Songs may be sung by congregation while people receive Communion

“Receive The Body Of Christ

Receive the Body of Christ
Taste the Fountain of Immortality
Alleluia! Alleluia!

“Spirit Song” Hymnal #384

After Communion the Celebrant says

Let us pray.

The People may join in saying this prayer

Almighty and everliving God, we thank You for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of Your Son, and heirs of Your eternal kingdom. And now, Father, send us out to do the work You have given us to do, to love and serve You as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To Him, to You, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

Celebrant:

The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of His Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the
Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain with you forever. Amen.

Closing Hymn  “Our God Reigns”  Hymnal #372

Last verse of My Country ‘Tis Of Thee

Our Father’s God, to Thee, author of liberty, to Thee we sing:
Long may our land be bright with freedom’s holy light;
protect us by Thy might, Great God, our King!

The Deacon dismisses them with these words.

Deacon           Go in peace to love and serve the Lord as God’s light to the nations; Honor the Lord, preach what you know of the risen Christ, and may the Holy Spirit strengthen you with peace as He alights on you and affirms you as God’s beloved ones.  Alleluia! Alleluia!

People             Thanks be to God. Alleluia! Alleluia!
