The Fifteenth Sunday After Pentecost

Liturgy of the Word

Processional Hymn All stand. The people of God sang as they approached the Temple for worship. The procession helps us remember that coming into the presence of God is an
extraordinarily special privilege.

“To God Be The Glory” Hymnal #12

The people standing, the Celebrant says:

Celebrant        The Lord be with you:
People             And also with you.

Celebrant        The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it:
People             Let the heavens rejoice and the earth be glad.

Celebrant        I was glad when they said to me:
People             Let us go to the house of the Lord.

Celebrant        Praise the Lord:
People             The name of the Lord be praised.

Celebrant        Let us pray:

People         Almighty God, you bring to light things hidden in darkness, and know the shadows of our hearts: Cleanse and renew us by your Spirit, that we may walk in the light and glorify your name, through Jesus Christ, the Light of the world, Amen.

Summary of the Law

Celebrant:

Our Lord Jesus Christ said, “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength...You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.” (Mk. 12:29-31)

Gloria

Sung by all.

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to His people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship You, we give You thanks, we praise You for Your glory.

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; You are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayers.

For You alone are the Holy One, You alone are the Lord, You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Celebrant:       The Lord be with you.
People:            And also with you.
Celebrant:       Let us pray.

Collect Prayer of the Day Prayed by Celebrant. We “collect” our acclamations, corporately proclaim a truth about God and ask His help in living out that truth.

First Reading  Exodus 14:19-31 (ESV)

      19Then the angel of God who was going before the host of Israel moved and went behind them, and the pillar of cloud moved from before them and stood behind them, 20 coming between the host of Egypt and the host of Israel. And there was the cloud and the darkness. And it lit up the night without one coming near the other all night.

     21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the Lord drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. 22 And the people of Israel went into the midst of the sea on dry ground, the waters being a wall to them on their right hand and on their left. 23 The Egyptians pursued and went in after them into the midst of the sea, all Pharaoh's horses, his chariots, and his horsemen. 24 And in the morning watch the Lord in the pillar of fire and of cloud looked down on the Egyptian forces and threw the Egyptian forces into a panic, 25 clogging their chariot wheels so that they drove heavily. And the Egyptians said, “Let us flee from before Israel, for the Lord fights for them against the Egyptians.”

     26 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea, that the water may come back upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their horsemen.” 27 So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to its normal course when the morning appeared. And as the Egyptians fled into it, the Lord threw the Egyptians into the midst of the sea. 28 The waters returned and covered the chariots and the horsemen; of all the host of Pharaoh that had followed them into the sea, not one of them remained. 29 But the people of Israel walked on dry ground through the sea, the waters being a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.

     30 Thus the Lord saved Israel that day from the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore. 31 Israel saw the great power that the Lord used against the Egyptians, so the people feared the Lord, and they believed in the Lord and in his servant Moses.

Reader:           The word of the Lord.
People:            Thanks be to God.

Psalm 114 (ESV)

1 When Israel went out from Egypt,
    the house of Jacob from a people of strange language,
Judah became his sanctuary,
    Israel his dominion.

The sea looked and fled;
    Jordan turned back.
The mountains skipped like rams,
    the hills like lambs.

5 What ails you, O sea, that you flee?
    O Jordan, that you turn back?
6 O mountains, that you skip like rams?
    O hills, like lambs?

7 Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord,
    at the presence of the God of Jacob,
who turns the rock into a pool of water,
    the flint into a spring of water.

Second Reading Romans 11:11-36 (ESV)

     11 So I ask, did they stumble in order that they might fall? By no means! Rather, through their trespass salvation has come to the Gentiles, so as to make Israel jealous. 12 Now if their trespass means riches for the world, and if their failure means riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their full inclusion mean!

     13 Now I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry 14 in order somehow to make my fellow Jews jealous, and thus save some of them. 15 For if their rejection means the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance mean but life from the dead? 16 If the dough offered as firstfruits is holy, so is the whole lump, and if the root is holy, so are the branches.

     17 But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, although a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing root of the olive tree, 18 do not be arrogant toward the branches. If you are, remember it is not you who support the root, but the root that supports you. 19 Then you will say, “Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.” 20 That is true. They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you stand fast through faith. So do not become proud, but fear. 21 For if God did not spare the natural branches, neither will he spare you. 22 Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God's kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness. Otherwise you too will be cut off. 23 And even they, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God has the power to graft them in again. 24 For if you were cut from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these, the natural branches, be grafted back into their own olive tree.

     25 Lest you be wise in your own sight, I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery, brothers: a partial hardening has come upon Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. 26 And in this way all Israel will be saved, as it is written,

“The Deliverer will come from Zion,
    he will banish ungodliness from Jacob”;
27 “and this will be my covenant with them
    when I take away their sins.”

28 As regards the gospel, they are enemies for your sake. But as regards election, they are beloved for the sake of their forefathers. 29 For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. 30 For just as you were at one time disobedient to God but now have received mercy because of their disobedience, 31 so they too have now been disobedient in order that by the mercy shown to you they also may now receive mercy. 32 For God has consigned all to disobedience, that he may have mercy on all.

     33 Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!

34 “For who has known the mind of the Lord,
    or who has been his counselor?”
35 “Or who has given a gift to him
    that he might be repaid?”

36 For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.

People:            Thanks be to God.

Gospel Reading   Matthew 18:21-35 (ESV)

Reader:           The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.
People:            Glory to You, Lord Christ.

     21 Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” 22 Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times.

     23 “Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. 24 When he began to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. 25 And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. 26 So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’ 27 And out of pity for him, the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. 28 But when that same servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii, and seizing him, he began to choke him, saying, ‘Pay what you owe.’ 29 So his fellow servant fell down and pleaded with him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you.’ 30 He refused and went and put him in prison until he should pay the debt. 31 When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their master all that had taken place. 32 Then his master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. 33 And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’ 34 And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers, until he should pay all his debt. 35 So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.”

Sermon          Fr. Andrew Doan

Nicene Creed We respond to the Word of God read and expounded by stating aloud an ancient form of confessing our belief.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally
begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father, Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic1 and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

1”catholic” means for all people, in all places, at all times

The Leader and People pray responsively

In peace, we pray to you, Lord God.

For all people in their daily life and work;
For our families, friends, and neighbors, and for those who are alone.

For this community, the nation, and the world;
For all who work for justice, freedom, and peace.

For the just and proper use of your creation;
For the victims of hunger, fear, injustice, and oppression.

For all who are in danger, sorrow, or any kind of trouble;
For those who minister to the sick, the friendless, and the needy.

For the peace and unity of the Church of God;
For all who proclaim the Gospel, and all who seek the Truth.

For our Bishops and for all bishops and other ministers;
For all who serve God in his Church.

For the special needs and concerns of this congregation.

Hear us, Lord;
For your mercy is great.

We thank you, Lord, for all the blessings of this life.

We will exalt you, O God our King;
And praise your Name for ever and ever.

We pray for all who have died, that they may have a place in your eternal kingdom.

Lord, let your loving-kindness be upon them;
Who put their trust in you.

We pray to you also for the forgiveness of our sins.

Silence may be kept.

Leader and People

Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; in your compassion forgive us our sins, known and unknown, things done and left undone; and so uphold us by your Spirit that we may live and serve you in newness of life, to the honor and glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Celebrant:        Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life.

People:       Amen.

Passing of the Peace We greet one another and seek out anyone present with whom we are at odds with before coming to Holy Communion.

Celebrant    The Peace of the Lord be always with you.
People        And also with you.

The Great Thanksgiving

        At the Last Supper, Jesus commanded His disciples to remember Him in this fellowship “meal.”

        People baptized in the Trinitarian form who discern the presence of Jesus in the Bread and the Wine are welcome to receive Holy Communion. A gluten free wafer is available upon request.

African Eucharistic Prayer

In this prayer, the lines in italics are spoken by the People.

The Celebrant says

                        Is the Father with us?
People             He is.

Celebrant        Is Christ among us?
People             He is.

Celebrant        Is the Spirit here?
People             He is.

Celebrant        This is our God.
People             Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Celebrant        We are His people.
People             We are redeemed.

Celebrant        Lift up your hearts.
People             We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant        Let us give thanks unto our Lord God.
People             It is meet and right so to do.

It is very meet, right, and our delight to give You thanks and praise, Holy Father, living God, supreme over the world, Creator, Provider, Savior and Giver.

Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and all in heaven, we proclaim Your great and glorious name.

Celebrant and People

      Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
      heaven and earth are full of Your glory.
          Hosanna in the highest.

      Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
          Hosanna in the highest.

The people stand or kneel.

Then the Celebrant continues

Almighty God, Owner of all things, we thank You for giving up Your only Son to die on the cross for us who owe You everything. Pour Your refreshing Spirit on us as we remember Him in the way He commanded.

On the night that He was betrayed He took bread and gave You thanks; He broke it and gave it to His disciples saying, “Take, eat; this is My body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of Me.”

People:     Amen. His body was broken for us.

Then the Celebrant continues

In the same way, after supper He took the cup and gave You thanks; He gave it to them saying, “Drink this, all of you; this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

People             Amen.  We are brothers and sisters through His blood.
                                     We have died together.
                                     We will rise together.
                                     We will live together.

Then the Celebrant continues

Therefore, heavenly Father, hear us as we celebrate this covenant with joy, and await the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. He died in our place, making a full atonement for the sins of the whole world, the perfect sacrifice, once and for all. You accepted His offering by raising Him from death, and granting Him great honor at Your right hand on high.

People     Amen. Jesus is Lord.

Spiritual Communion (said by all)

O Most blessed Savior,
in union with the faithful at every altar of Your Church
where Your blessed Body and Blood are being offered to the Father,
I desire to offer You praise and thanksgiving,
I present to You my soul and body with the earnest wish that I may
always be united to You.

I believe that You are truly present in the Holy Sacrament.
And since I cannot now receive You sacramentally into my heart;
I unite myself to You and embrace You with all the affections of my soul.
Let me never be separated from You.
Let me live and die in Your love. Amen.

Come, Lord Jesus, and dwell in the fulness of Your strength,
in the perfection of Your ways, and in the holiness of Your Spirit,
and rule over every hostile power within me in the might of Your Spirit,
and to the glory of Your Father. Amen.

The Celebrant continues

Let Your Spirit come upon these gifts to make them holy, so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord, Jesus Christ. This is the feast of victory.

People             The Lamb who was slain has begun His reign. Hallelujah!

Celebrant        We are one body.
People             We share one bread.

Celebrant        Draw near with faith.
People             Christ is the host and we are his guests

Celebrant:       As Jesus taught us, we now sing,

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread

The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread.

A period of silence is kept.

Celebrant:       Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;
People:            Therefore let us keep the feast.

Celebrant:       The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ                         died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

Blessed are those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb.

When you come forward for communion if you would like the consecrated wafer only, please stay in the center of the aisle and Fr. Andy will give you the wafer only.  If you prefer to receive the wafer dipped in the chalice of consecrated wine, please go to the right or left of Fr. Andy to receive the wafer dipped in wine.

The ministers receive the Sacrament in both kinds, and then immediately deliver it to the people.

The Body of Christ, the bread of heaven. [Amen.]
The Blood of Christ, the cup of salvation. [Amen.]

Hymns & Songs may be sung by congregation while people receive Communion.

“Receive The Body Of Christ”

Receive the Body of Christ
Taste the Fountain of Immortality
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Alleluia!

“Sanctuary” Hymnal #655

After Communion the Celebrant says

Let us pray.

Celebrant and People:

Almighty and everliving God, we most heartily thank You for feeding us, in these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of Your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and You assure us thereby of Your favor and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of Your Son, the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs, through hope, of Your everlasting kingdom. And we humbly beseech You, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with Your grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works that You have prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with You and the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen.

The Bishop when present, or the Priest, gives the blessing

The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of His Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be amongst you, and remain with you always. Amen.

Closing Hymn “We’re Marching To Zion” Hymnal #416

Last verse of My Country ‘Tis Of Thee

Our Father’s God, to Thee, author of liberty, to Thee we sing:

protect us by Thy might, Great God, our King!

                        Let us go forth into the world, rejoicing in the power of the Spirit.
People             Thanks be to God.

Bible verse for this week:
Isaiah 41:10   Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
