The Seventeenth Sunday After Pentecost
Liturgy of the Word
Processional Hymn All stand. The people of God sang as they
approached the Temple for worship. The procession helps us remember that coming
into the presence of God is an
extraordinarily special privilege.
“Here I Am To Worship”
Light of the world
You stepped down into darkness
Opened my eyes let me see.
Beauty that made this heart adore You
Hope of a life spent with You.
Chorus
So here I am to worship.
Here I am to bow down.
Here I am to say that You're my God,
And You're altogether lovely
Altogether worthy
Altogether wonderful to me.
King of all days
Oh so highly exalted
Glorious in heaven above.
Humbly You came
To the earth You created
All for love's sake became poor.
Chorus, followed by:
And I'll never know how
much it cost
To see my sin upon that cross.
And I'll never know how much it cost
To see my sin upon that cross.
Chorus (So here I am to worship…)

glorify your name, through Jesus Christ, the Light of the world, Amen.
Summary of the Law
Celebrant:
Our Lord Jesus Christ said, “Hear, O
Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God
with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all
your strength...You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other
commandment greater than these.” (Mk. 12:29-31)
Gloria
Sung by all.
Glory
to God in the highest, and peace to His people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship You, we give You
thanks, we praise You for Your glory.
Lord
Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, You take away the
sin of the world: have mercy on us; You are seated at the right hand of the
Father: receive our prayers.
For
You alone are the Holy One, You alone are the Lord, You alone are the Most
High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
Celebrant: The
Lord be with you.
People: And also with
you.
Celebrant:
Let us pray.
Collect Prayer of the
Day Prayed by Celebrant. We
“collect” our acclamations, corporately proclaim a truth about God and ask His
help in living out that truth.
First
Reading Exodus 17:1-7
(ESV)
1
All the congregation of
the people of Israel moved on from the wilderness of Sin by stages, according
to the commandment of the Lord,
and camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. 2 Therefore the people quarreled with Moses
and said, “Give us water to drink.” And Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel
with me? Why do you test the Lord?” 3 But the people thirsted there for water,
and the people grumbled against Moses and said, “Why did you bring us up
out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?” 4 So Moses cried to the Lord, “What shall I do with this people?
They are almost ready to stone me.” 5 And the Lord said to Moses, “Pass on before the people, taking
with you some of the elders of Israel, and take in your hand the staff
with which you struck the Nile, and go. 6 Behold, I will stand before you there on
the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of
it, and the people will drink.” And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of
Israel. 7 And he called the name of the
place Massah and Meribah, because of the quarreling of the
people of Israel, and because they tested the Lord by saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
Reader: The
word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to
God.
Psalm 78 1-4,12-16 (ESV)
1 Give ear, O my people, to my teaching;
incline your ears to the words of my mouth!
2 I will open my mouth in a parable;
I will utter dark sayings from of old,
3 things that we have heard and known,
that our fathers have told us.
4 We will not hide them from their
children,
but tell to the coming generation
the glorious deeds of the Lord,
and his might,
and the wonders that he has done.
12 In the sight of their fathers he
performed wonders
in the land of Egypt, in the fields of Zoan.
13 He divided the sea and let them pass
through it,
and made the waters stand like a heap.
14 In the daytime he led them with a cloud,
and all the night with a fiery light.
15 He split rocks in the wilderness
and gave them drink abundantly as from the deep.
16 He made streams come out of the rock
and caused waters to flow down like rivers.

Gospel Reading
Matthew 21:23-32 (ESV)
Reader: The
Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.
People: Glory to You,
Lord Christ.
23 And when he entered the temple, the chief
priests and the elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching,
and said, “By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you
this authority?” 24 Jesus
answered them, “I also will ask you one question, and if you tell me the
answer, then I also will tell you by what authority I do these things. 25 The baptism of John, from where did
it come? From heaven or from man?” And they discussed it among
themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say to us, ‘Why
then did you not believe him?’ 26 But if we say, ‘From man,’ we are
afraid of the crowd, for they all hold that John was a prophet.” 27 So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.”
And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these
things.
28 “What do you think? A man had two sons.
And he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard
today.’ 29 And he answered, ‘I will not,’ but afterward
he changed his mind and went. 30 And he went to the other son and said the
same. And he answered, ‘I go, sir,’ but did not go. 31 Which of the two did the will of his
father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to
you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes go into the kingdom
of God before you. 32 For John came to you in the way of
righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors
and the prostitutes believed him. And even when you saw it, you did not
afterward change your minds and believe him.
Reader: The
Gospel of the Lord.
People: Praise to You,
Lord Christ.
Sermon Fr.
Andrew Doan
Nicene Creed We respond to the Word of God read and
expounded by stating aloud an ancient form of confessing our belief.
We believe in one God, the Father, the
Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the
only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from
Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the
Father, Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came
down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the
Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third
day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to
judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord,
the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father
and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic1 and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for
the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life
of the world to come. Amen.
1”catholic” means for all
people, in all places, at all times

Therefore with Angels
and Archangels, and all in heaven, we proclaim Your great and glorious name.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
The people stand or kneel.
Then the Celebrant
continues
Almighty God, Owner of all things, we thank You for giving up Your only Son to die on the cross for us who owe You everything. Pour Your refreshing Spirit on us as we remember Him in the way He commanded.
On the night that He was betrayed He took
bread and gave You thanks; He broke it and gave it to His disciples saying,
“Take, eat; this is My body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of
Me.”
People Amen. His body was broken for us.
Then the Celebrant continues
In the same way, after supper He took the
cup and gave You thanks; He gave it to them saying, “Drink this, all of you;
this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for
the forgiveness of sins. Do this as often as you drink it, in remembrance of
Me.”
People Amen. We are brothers and sisters through His
blood.
We have died together.
We will rise together.
We will live together.
Then
the Celebrant continues
Therefore, heavenly Father, hear us as we
celebrate this covenant with joy, and await the coming of our Savior, Jesus
Christ. He died in our place, making a full atonement for the sins of the whole
world, the perfect sacrifice, once and for all. You accepted His offering by
raising Him from death, and granting Him great honor at Your right hand on
high.
People Amen. Jesus is Lord.
Spiritual Communion (said by all)
O
Most blessed Savior,
in union with the faithful at every altar of Your Church
where Your blessed Body and Blood are being offered to the Father,
I desire to offer You praise and thanksgiving,
I present to You my soul and body with the earnest wish that I may
always be united to You.
I believe that You are truly present in
the Holy Sacrament.
And since I cannot now receive You sacramentally into my heart;
I unite myself to You and embrace You with all the affections of my soul.
Let me never be separated from You.
Let me live and die in Your love. Amen.
Come, Lord Jesus, and dwell in the fulness
of Your strength,
in the perfection of Your ways, and in the holiness of Your Spirit,
and rule over every hostile power within me in the might of Your Spirit,
and to the glory of Your Father. Amen.
Blessed, praised, and adored be Jesus
Christ on His throne of glory in
Heaven, and in the most Holy Sacrament of the Altar. Amen.
The Celebrant continues
Let Your Spirit come upon these gifts to
make them holy, so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord,
Jesus Christ. This is the feast of victory.
People The

heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth
as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive
those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from
evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever.
Amen

Let us pray.
Celebrant and People:
Almighty and everliving God, we most
heartily thank You for feeding us, in these holy mysteries, with the spiritual
food of the most precious Body and Blood of Your Son our Savior Jesus Christ;
and You assure us thereby of Your favor and goodness towards us; and that we
are very members incorporate in the mystical body of Your Son, the blessed
company of all faithful people; and are also heirs, through hope, of Your
everlasting kingdom. And we humbly beseech You, O heavenly Father, so to assist
us with Your grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all
such good works that You have prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ

Bible verse for this week:
Matthew 10:29-31 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny?
Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And
even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are
worth more than many sparrows.
