The Tenth Sunday After Pentecost

Liturgy of the Word

Processional Hymn All stand. The people of God sang as they approached the Temple for worship. The procession helps us remember that coming into the presence of God is an extraordinarily special privilege.

“Crown Him With Many Crowns” Hymnal #45

 Opening Acclamation Call to worship, to purposefully enter God’s nearer presence.

Celebrant:    Blessed be God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
People:         And Blessed be His Kingdom, now and forever.  Amen.

Prayer for Purity Said by all. We ask God to help us worship Him in truth in all of life.

Almighty God, to You all hearts are open, all desires known, and from You no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of Your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love You and worthily magnify Your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Summary of the Law

Celebrant:

Our Lord Jesus Christ said, “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength...You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.” (Mk. 12:29-31)

Gloria

Sung by all.

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to His people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship You, we give You thanks, we praise You for Your glory.

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; You are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayers.

For You alone are the Holy One, You alone are the Lord, You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Celebrant:       The Lord be with you.
People:            And also with you.
Celebrant:       Let us pray.

Collect Prayer of the Day Prayed by Celebrant. We “collect” our acclamations, corporately proclaim a truth about God and ask His help in living out that truth.

First Reading  Genesis 37:1-4, 12-28   (ESV)

    1 Jacob lived in the land of his father's sojournings, in the land of
Canaan.

These are the generations of Jacob.

    Joseph, being seventeen years old, was pasturing the flock with his brothers. He was a boy with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father's wives. And Joseph brought a bad report of them to their father.3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than any other of his sons, because he was the son of his old age. And he made him a robe of many colors. But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not speak peacefully to him.

     12 Now his brothers went to pasture their father's flock near Shechem. 13 And Israel said to Joseph, “Are not your brothers pasturing the flock at Shechem? Come, I will send you to them.” And he said to him, “Here I am.” 14 So he said to him, “Go now, see if it is well with your brothers and with the flock, and bring me word.” So he sent him from the Valley of Hebron, and he came to Shechem. 15 And a man found him wandering in the fields. And the man asked him, “What are you seeking?” 16 “I am seeking my brothers,” he said. “Tell me, please, where they are pasturing the flock.” 17 And the man said, “They have gone away, for I heard them say, ‘Let us go to Dothan.’” So Joseph went after his brothers and found them at Dothan.

     18 They saw him from afar, and before he came near to them they conspired against him to kill him. 19 They said to one another, “Here comes this dreamer. 20 Come now, let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits. Then we will say that a fierce animal has devoured him, and we will see what will become of his dreams.” 21 But when Reuben heard it, he rescued him out of their hands, saying, “Let us not take his life.” 22 And Reuben said to them, “Shed no blood; throw him into this pit here in the wilderness, but do not lay a hand on him”—that he might rescue him out of their hand to restore him to his father. 23 So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe, the robe of many colors that he wore. 24 And they took him and threw him into a pit. The pit was empty; there was no water in it.

     25 Then they sat down to eat. And looking up they saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead, with their camels bearing gum, balm, and myrrh, on their way to carry it down to Egypt. 26 Then Judah said to his brothers, “What profit is it if we kill our brother and conceal his blood? 27 Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him, for he is our brother, our own flesh.” And his brothers listened to him. 28 Then Midianite traders passed by. And they drew Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver. They took Joseph to Egypt.

Psalm 105:1-6, 16-22, 45b (ESV)

1 Oh give thanks to the Lord; call upon his name;
    make known his deeds among the peoples!
Sing to him, sing praises to him;
    tell of all his wondrous works!
3 Glory in his holy name;
    let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice!
4 Seek the Lord and his strength;
    seek his presence continually!
5 Remember the wondrous works that he has done,
    his miracles, and the judgments he uttered,
6 O offspring of Abraham, his servant,
    children of Jacob, his chosen ones!

16When he summoned a famine on the land
    and broke all supply of bread,
17 he had sent a man ahead of them,
    Joseph, who was sold as a slave.
18 His feet were hurt with fetters;
    his neck was put in a collar of iron;
19 until what he had said came to pass,
    the word of the Lord tested him.
20 The king sent and released him;
    the ruler of the peoples set him free;
21 he made him lord of his house
    and ruler of all his possessions,
22 to bind his princes at his pleasure
    and to teach his elders wisdom.

45 Praise the Lord!

Second Reading Romans 8:18-39 (ESV)

     18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. 23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

     26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. 28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. 29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.

     31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? 33 Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written,

“For your sake we are being killed all the day long;
    we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”

37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Gospel Reading   Matthew 14:22-33   (ESV)

Reader:           The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.
People:            Glory to You, Lord Christ.

     22 Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 23 And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24 but the boat by this time was a long way from the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them. 25 And in the fourth watch of the night  he came to them, walking on the sea. 26 But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”

     28 And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” 29 He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” 31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32 And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33 And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

Sermon      Fr. Andrew Doan

Nicene Creed We respond to the Word of God read and expounded by stating aloud an ancient form of confessing our belief.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic1 and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

1”catholic” means for all people, in all places, at all times

Pause for silent confessing to God of anything that may be weighing upon you.

Minister and people:

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of Your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in Your will, and walk in Your ways, to the glory of Your Name. Amen.

Announcements

Liturgy of the Table - Holy Communion

Offertory Hymn We offer to God in thanksgiving for all He has done for us by giving generously to the work of His church and towards the furthering of His Kingdom.

“As The Deer” Hymnal #548

Doxology Celebratory praise is appropriate for the ability God provides us and the
privilege of joining Him in His work.

Praise God from Whom all blessings flow.
Praise Him all creatures here below.
Praise Him above, Ye heavenly Host.
Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Birthday Prayer (when needed): (Come to the altar rail after the ushers bring forward the alms basins).

Many happy returns of the day of thy birth, and may seasons of joy be given, and may the dear Father prepare thee on earth for a glorious birthday in heaven. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving

        At the Last Supper, Jesus commanded His disciples to remember Him in this fellowship “meal.”

        People baptized in the Trinitarian form who discern the presence of Jesus in the Bread and the Wine are welcome to receive Holy Communion. A gluten free wafer is available upon request.

Eucharistic Prayer C

In this prayer, the lines in italics are spoken by the People.

The Celebrant, whether bishop or priest, faces them and says

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

Then, facing the Holy Table, the Celebrant proceeds

God of all power, Ruler of the Universe, You are worthy of glory and praise.
Glory to You for ever and ever.

At Your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home.
By your will they were created and have their being.

From the primal elements You brought forth the human race, and blessed us with memory, reason, and skill. You made us the rulers of creation. But we turned against You, and betrayed Your trust; and we turned against one another.
Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in your sight.

Again and again, You called us to return. Through prophets and sages You revealed Your righteous Law. And in the fullness of time You sent Your only Son, born of a woman, to fulfill Your Law, to open for us the way of freedom and peace.
By His blood, He reconciled us.
By His wounds, we are healed.

And therefore we praise You, joining with the heavenly chorus, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all those in every generation who have looked to You in hope, to proclaim with them Your glory, in their unending hymn:

Celebrant and People

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full [full] of your glory.
            Hosanna in the highest.  [Hosanna in the highest]
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
            Hosanna in the highest.  [Hosanna in the highest]

The Celebrant continues

And so, Father, we who have been redeemed by Him, and made a new people by water and the Spirit, now bring before you these gifts. Sanctify them by Your Holy Spirit to be the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord.

At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.

On the night He was betrayed He took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his friends, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper, He took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is My Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of Me.”

Remembering now His work of redemption, and offering to you this sacrifice of thanksgiving,
We celebrate His death and resurrection, as we await the day of His coming.

Lord God of our Fathers; God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: Open our eyes to see Your hand at work in the world about us. Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace only, and not for strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal. Let the grace of this Holy Communion make us one body, one spirit in Christ, that we may worthily serve the world in His name.
Risen Lord, be known to us in the breaking of the Bread.

Spiritual Communion (said by all)

O Most blessed Savior,
in union with the faithful at every altar of Your Church
where Your blessed Body and Blood are being offered to the Father,
I desire to offer You praise and thanksgiving,
I present to You my soul and body with the earnest wish that I may
always be united to You.

I believe that You are truly present in the Holy Sacrament.
And since I cannot now receive You sacramentally into my heart;
I unite myself to You and embrace You with all the affections of my soul.
Let me never be separated from You.
Let me live and die in Your love. Amen.

Come, Lord Jesus, and dwell in the fulness of Your strength,
in the perfection of Your ways, and in the holiness of Your Spirit,
and rule over every hostile power within me in the might of Your Spirit,
and to the glory of Your Father. Amen.

Blessed, praised, and adored be Jesus Christ on His throne of glory in Heaven, and in the most Holy Sacrament of the Altar. Amen.

Celebrant continues:

Accept these prayers and praises, Father, through Jesus Christ our great High Priest, to whom, with You and the Holy Spirit, Your Church gives honor, glory, and worship, from generation to generation. AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

People and Celebrant:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen

The Breaking of the Bread

The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread.

A period of silence is kept.

Celebrant:      Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;
People:          Therefore let us keep the feast.

Celebrant:      The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ  died for you, and feed on Him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

The ministers receive the Sacrament in both kinds, and then deliver it to the people.

The Bread [and the Cup] are administered with these or similar words

The Body of Christ, the bread of heaven. [Amen.]
The Blood of Christ, the cup of salvation. [Amen.]

Hymns & Songs may be sung by congregation while people receive Communion.

“Receive The Body Of Christ”

Receive the Body of Christ
Taste the Fountain of Immortality
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Alleluia!

“O Come Let Us Adore Him” Hymnal #196

Let us pray.

Celebrant and People:

Almighty and everliving God, we thank You for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of Your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of Your Son, and heirs of Your eternal kingdom. And now, Father, send us out to do the work You have given us to do, to love and serve You as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To Him, to You, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

The Bishop when present, or the Priest, may bless the people.

The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be with you, and remain with you always. Amen.

Closing Hymn “amazing Grace” Hymnal #343

Last Verse of “My Country, Tis of Thee”

Our Father’s God, to Thee, Author of liberty, to Thee we sing:
Long may our land be bright, with freedom’s holy light;
Protect us by Thy might, great God our King.

The Deacon, or the Celebrant, dismisses them with these words. We return to the world to be God’s people sharing His Good News.

    Let us go forth in the Name of Christ. .
People: Thanks be to God.
