The Ninth Sunday After Pentecost
Liturgy of the Word
Processional Hymn All stand. The people of God sang as they
approached the Temple for worship. The procession helps us remember that coming
into the presence of God is an
extraordinarily special privilege.

Prayer for Purity Said by all. We ask God to help us worship
Him in truth in all of life.
Almighty God, to You all hearts are open,
all desires known, and from You no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our
hearts by the inspiration of Your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love You
and worthily magnify Your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Decalogue (Ten Commandments; Ex. 20:1-17)

4You shall not make for yourself a carved
image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the

them, for I the Lord your God am a
jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third
and the fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing steadfast love to thousands

7You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who
takes his name in vain.

Reading Genesis 32:22-31 (ESV)

wives, his two female servants, and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of
the Jabbok. 23 He took them and sent them across the stream, and
everything else that he had. 24 And Jacob was left alone. And a man wrestled
with him until the breaking of the day. 25 When the man saw that he did not prevail
against Jacob, he touched his hip socket, and Jacob's hip was put out of joint
as he wrestled with him. 26 Then he said, “Let me go, for the day has
broken.” But Jacob said, “I will not let you go unless you bless
me.” 27 And he said to him, “What is your name?”

longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men,

Peniel,
saying, “For I have
seen God face to face, and yet my life has been delivered.” 31 The sun rose upon him as he
passed Penuel, limping because of his hip.

Reading Romans 8:12-25 (ESV)
12 So then, brothers, we are
debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you
will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you
will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of
God are sons
of God. 15 For you did not receive the
spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit
of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our
spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of
God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order
that we may also be glorified with him.
18 For I consider that the sufferings of this
present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed
to us. 19 For the creation waits with eager longing
for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to
futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in
hope 21 that the creation itself will be set
free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the
children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation has been
groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. 23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves,
who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we
wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved.
Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see,
we wait for it with patience.

the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to
heaven and said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the

Nicene Creed We respond to the Word of God read and
expounded by stating aloud an ancient form of confessing our belief.
We believe in one God, the Father, the
Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the
only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from
Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the
Father, Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came
down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the
Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius
Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in
accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the
right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and
the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord,
the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father
and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic1 and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for
the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life

Prayers of the People
The Bible teaches us to pray for ourselves
and others in various conditions and functions. The Leader and People pray

it for a while after he finishes.
