The Thirteenth Sunday After Pentecost

Liturgy of the Word

Processional Hymn All stand. The people of God sang as they approached the Temple for worship. The procession helps us remember that coming into the presence of God is an
extraordinarily special privilege.

“A Mighty Fortress Is Our God” Hymnal #151

Opening Acclamation Call to worship, to purposefully enter God’s nearer presence.

Celebrant:    Blessed be God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
People:         And Blessed be His Kingdom, now and forever. Amen.

Prayer for Purity Said by all. We ask God to help us worship Him in truth in all of life.

Almighty God, to You all hearts are open, all desires known, and from You no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of Your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love You and worthily magnify Your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Summary of the Law

Celebrant:

Our Lord Jesus Christ said, “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength...You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.” (Mk. 12:29-31)

Gloria

Sung by all.

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to His people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship You, we give You thanks, we praise You for Your glory.

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; You are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayers.

For You alone are the Holy One, You alone are the Lord, You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Celebrant:       The Lord be with you.
People:            And also with you.
Celebrant:       Let us pray.

Collect Prayer of the Day Prayed by Celebrant. We “collect” our acclamations, corporately proclaim a truth about God and ask His help in living out that truth.

First Reading Exodus 3:1-15 (ESV)

1 Now Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian, and he led his flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed. 3 And Moses said, “I will turn aside to see this great sight, why the bush is not burned.” When the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” 5 Then he said, “Do not come near; take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” 6 And he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.

Then the Lord said, “I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters. I know their sufferings, 8 and I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land to a good and broad land, a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 9 And now, behold, the cry of the people of Israel has come to me, and I have also seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them. 10 Come, I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.” 11 But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to
Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?”
12 He said, “But I will be with you, and this shall be the sign for you, that I have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain.”

13 Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?” 14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I am has sent me to you.’” 15 God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations.

Reader:           The word of the Lord.
People:            Thanks be to God.

Psalm 105:1-6, 23-26, 45c (ESV)

1  Oh give thanks to the Lord; call upon his name;
make known his deeds among the peoples!
2 Sing to him, sing praises to him;
tell of all his wondrous works!
3 Glory in his holy name;
let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice!
Seek the Lord and his strength;
    seek his presence continually!
5 Remember the wondrous works that he has done,
his miracles, and the judgments he uttered,
6 O offspring of Abraham, his servant,
children of Jacob, his chosen ones!

23 Then Israel came to Egypt;
Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham.
24 And the Lord made his people very fruitful
and made them stronger than their foes.

25He turned their hearts to hate his people,
to deal craftily with his servants.

26 He sent Moses, his servant,
and Aaron, whom he had chosen.

45 Praise the Lord!

Second Reading Romans 9:30-10:21 (ESV)

30 What shall we say, then? That Gentiles who did not pursue
righteousness have attained it, that is, a righteousness that is by faith;
31 but that Israel who pursued a law that would lead to righteousness did not succeed in reaching that law. 32 Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were based on works. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone, 33 as it is written,

“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense;
and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

10     1  Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. 2 For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. For, being ignorant of the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness. 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

5 For Moses writes about the righteousness that is based on the law, that the person who does the commandments shall live by them. 6 But the righteousness based on faith says, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’” (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 “or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); 9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. 11 For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. 13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” 17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

18 But I ask, have they not heard? Indeed they have, for

“Their voice has gone out to all the earth,
and their words to the ends of the world.”

19 But I ask, did Israel not understand? First Moses says,

“I will make you jealous of those who are not a nation;
with a foolish nation I will make you angry.”

20 Then Isaiah is so bold as to say,

“I have been found by those who did not seek me;
I have shown myself to those who did not ask for me.”

21 But of Israel he says, “All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and contrary people.”

People:            Thanks be to God.

Sequence Hymns  “Give Thanks”  Hymnal #170

“Thank You, Lord” Hymnal #513

Gospel Reading   Matthew 16:21-28 (ESV)

Reader:           The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.
People:            Glory to You, Lord Christ.

21 From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. 22 And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord! This shall never happen to you.” 23 But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”

24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul? 27 For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done. 28 Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”

Reader:           The Gospel of the Lord.
People:            Praise to You, Lord Christ.

Sermon      Fr. Andrew Doan

Nicene Creed We respond to the Word of God read and expounded by stating aloud an ancient form of confessing our belief.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father, Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic1 and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

1”catholic” means for all people, in all places, at all times

We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of Your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in Your will, and walk in Your ways, to the glory of Your Name. Amen.

Liturgy of the Table - Holy Communion

Offertory Hymn We offer to God in thanksgiving for all He has done for us by giving
generously to the work of His church and towards the furthering of His Kingdom.

“Days Of Elijah”

These are the days of Elijah declaring the Word of the Lord
And these are the days of Your servant Moses
Righteousness being restored
And though these are days of great trials
Of famine and darkness and sword
till we are the voice in the desert crying
Prepare ye the way of the Lord

Chorus
Behold He comes riding on the clouds
Shining like the sun at the trumpet call
So lift your voice ,it's the year of Jubilee
And out of Zion's hill salvation comes

And these are the days of Ezekiel the dry bones becoming as flesh
And these are the days of Your servant David rebuilding a temple of praise
And these are the days of the harvest, the fields are as white in the world
And we are the labourers in Your vineyard declaring the Word of the Lord (Chorus)

Bridge

There is no god like Jehovah
There is no god like Jehovah
There is no god like Jehovah
There is no god like Jehovah (hey)

Doxology Celebratory praise is appropriate for the ability God provides us and the
privilege of joining Him in His work.

Praise God from Whom all blessings flow.
Praise Him all creatures here below.
Praise Him above, Ye heavenly Host.
Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Birthday Prayer (when needed): (Come to the altar rail after the ushers bring forward the alms basins).

Many happy returns of the day of thy birth, and may seasons of joy be given, and may the dear Father prepare thee on earth for a glorious birthday in heaven. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving

At the Last Supper, Jesus commanded His disciples to remember Him in this fellowship “meal.”

People baptized in the Trinitarian form who discern the presence of Jesus in the Bread and the Wine are welcome to receive Holy Communion. A gluten free wafer is available upon request.

Eucharistic Prayer C

In this prayer, the lines in italics are spoken by the People.

The Celebrant, whether bishop or priest, faces them and says

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

Then, facing the Holy Table, the Celebrant proceeds

God of all power, Ruler of the Universe, You are worthy of glory and praise.
Glory to You for ever and ever.

At Your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home.
By your will they were created and have their being.

From the primal elements You brought forth the human race, and blessed us with memory, reason, and skill. You made us the rulers of creation. But we turned against You, and betrayed Your trust; and we turned against one another.
Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in your sight.

Again and again, You called us to return. Through prophets and sages You revealed Your righteous Law. And in the fullness of time You sent Your only Son, born of a woman, to fulfill Your Law, to open for us the way of freedom and peace.
By His blood, He reconciled us.
By His wounds, we are healed.

And therefore we praise You, joining with the heavenly chorus, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all those in every generation who have looked to You in hope, to proclaim with them Your glory, in their unending hymn:

Celebrant and People

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full [full] of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.  [Hosanna in the highest]
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.  [Hosanna in the highest]

The Celebrant continues

And so, Father, we who have been redeemed by Him, and made a new people by water and the Spirit, now bring before You these gifts. Sanctify them by Your Holy Spirit to be the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord.

At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.

On the night He was betrayed He took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to His friends, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper, He took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is My Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of Me.”

Remembering now His work of redemption, and offering to you this sacrifice of thanksgiving,
We celebrate His death and resurrection, as we await the day of His coming.

Lord God of our Fathers; God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: Open our eyes to see Your hand at work in the world about us. Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace only, and not for strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal. Let the grace of this Holy Communion make us one body, one spirit in Christ, that we may worthily serve the world in His name.
Risen Lord, be known to us in the breaking of the Bread.

Spiritual Communion (said by all)

O Most blessed Savior,
in union with the faithful at every altar of Your Church
where Your blessed Body and Blood are being offered to the Father,
I desire to offer You praise and thanksgiving,
I present to You my soul and body with the earnest wish that I may
always be united to You.

I believe that You are truly present in the Holy Sacrament.
And since I cannot now receive You sacramentally into my heart;
I unite myself to You and embrace You with all the affections of my soul.
Let me never be separated from You.
Let me live and die in Your love. Amen.

Come, Lord Jesus, and dwell in the fulness of Your strength,
in the perfection of Your ways, and in the holiness of Your Spirit,
and rule over every hostile power within me in the might of Your Spirit,
and to the glory of Your Father. Amen.

Blessed, praised, and adored be Jesus Christ on His throne of glory in Heaven, and in the most Holy Sacrament of the Altar. Amen.

Celebrant continues:

Accept these prayers and praises, Father, through Jesus Christ our great High Priest, to whom, with You and the Holy Spirit, Your Church gives honor, glory, and worship, from generation to generation. AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

People and Celebrant:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen

The Breaking of the Bread

The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread.

A period of silence is kept.

Celebrant:       Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;
People:            Therefore let us keep the feast.

Celebrant:       The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on Him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

When you come forward for communion if you would like the consecrated wafer only, please stay in the center of the aisle and Fr. Andy will give you the wafer only.  If you prefer to receive the wafer dipped in the chalice of consecrated wine, please go to the right or left of Fr. Andy to receive the wafer dipped in wine.

The ministers receive the Sacrament in both kinds, and then deliver it to the people.
The Bread [and the Cup] are administered with these or similar words

The Body of Christ, the bread of heaven. [Amen.]
The Blood of Christ, the cup of salvation. [Amen.]

Hymns & Songs may be sung by congregation while people receive Communion.

“Receive The Body Of Christ”

Receive the Body of Christ
Taste the Fountain of Immortality
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

“Take Me In”

Take me past the outer courts
And thru the holy place
Past the brazen altar
Lord I want to see Your face

Pass me by the crowds of people
The priests who sing their praise
I hunger and thirst for Your righteousness
But it's only found one place

Chorus
So take me in to the Holy of Holies
Take me in by the blood of the Lamb
So take me in to the Holy of Holies
Take the coal cleanse my lips
Here I am

Let us pray.

Celebrant and People:

Almighty and everliving God, we thank You for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of Your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of Your Son, and heirs of Your eternal kingdom. And now, Father, send us out to do the work You have given us to do, to love and serve You as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To Him, to You, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

The Bishop when present, or the Priest, may bless the people.

The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be with you, and remain with you always. Amen.

 Closing Hymn “Awesome God”

Chorus
Our God is an awesome God , He reigns from heaven above
With wisdom pow'r and love, our God is an awesome God

When He rolls up His sleeves , He ain't just puttin' on the ritz
Our God is an awesome God , there is thunder in His footsteps
And lightning in His fists, iur God is an awesome God   Chorus

And the Lord wasn't joking when He kicked 'em out of Eden
It wasn't for no reason that He shed His blood
His return is very close and so you'd better be believin'
That our God is an awesome God
  Chorus

When the sky was starless In the void of the night
Our God is an awesome God, He spoke into the darkness
And created the light, our God is an awesome God

Judgment and wrath He poured out on Sodom
Mercy and grace He gave us at the cross
I hope that we have not too quickly forgotten that our God is an awesome God Chorus
