Second Sunday of Easter
Liturgy of the Word
Processional Hymn All stand. The people of God sang as they approached the Temple for worship. The procession helps us remember that coming into the presence of God is an extraordinarily special privilege.
Christ Arose” Hymnal #357
Low in the grave he lay, Jesus my Savior,
Waiting the coming day, Jesus my Lord.
Chorus
Up from the grave he arose;
With a mighty triumph o’er his foes;
He arose a victor from the dark domain,
And he lives forever with his saints to reign.
He arose!  He arose! Hallelujah! Christ arose!
Vainly they watch his bed, Jesus my savior;
Vainly they seal the dead, Jesus my Lord.
(Chorus)
Death cannot keep his prey, Jesus my Savior;
He tore the bars away, Jesus my Lord. (
Chorus)
By Robert Lowry; Public Domain
Opening Acclamation Call to worship, to purposefully enter God’s nearer presence.
Celebrant: Alleluia! Christ is risen!
People: The Lord is risen indeed! Alleluia!
Prayer for Purity Said by all. We ask God to help us worship Him in truth in all of life.
Almighty God, to You all hearts are open, all desires known, and from You no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of Your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love You and worthily magnify Your holy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Decalogue (Ten Commandments; Ex. 20:1-17)
Celebrant:
1And God spoke all these words, saying,
2I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 3You shall have no other gods before me.
4You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 6but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.
7You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.
8Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, 10but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. 11For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
People: Lord, have mercy on us, and write these laws in our hearts.
Celebrant:
12Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.
13You shall not murder.
14You shall not commit adultery.
15You shall not steal.
16You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
17You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.
People: Lord, have mercy on us, and write these laws in our hearts.
Gloria
Sung by all.
Glory to God in the highest, and peace to His people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship You, we give You thanks, we praise You for Your glory.
Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; You are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayers.

For You alone are the Holy One, You alone are the Lord, You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
Collect Prayer of the Day Prayed by Celebrant. We “collect” our acclamations, corporately proclaim a truth about God and ask His help in living out that truth.
First Reading  Acts 2:14a,22-32 *
14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them:…
22 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— 23 this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. 24 God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. 25 For David says concerning him,
   “‘I saw the Lord always before me,
       for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken;
26  therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced;
       my flesh also will dwell in hope.
27  For you will not abandon my soul to Hades,
       or let your Holy One see corruption.
28  You have made known to me the paths of life;
       you will make me full of gladness with your presence.’
       29 “Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, 31 he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. 32 This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses.
Reader: The word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.
Psalm 16 (ESV)  *
1 Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge.
2 I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
I have no good apart from you.”
As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones,in whom is all my delight.
The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply;
their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out
or take their names on my lips.
The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup;
you hold my lot.
The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.
I bless the Lord who gives me counsel;
in the night also my heart instructs me.
I have set the Lord always before me;
because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.
Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices;
my flesh also dwells secure.
10  For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol,
or let your holy one see corruption.
11  You make known to me the path of life;
in your presence there is fullness of joy;
at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
Second Reading 1 Peter 1:3-9 *
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
Reader: The word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.

Gospel Reading  John 20:19-31 *
Reader: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.
People: Glory to You, Lord Christ.
19 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.”
24 Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.”
26 Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” 28 Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
Reader: The Gospel of the Lord.
People: Praise to You, Lord Christ.
Sermon Fr. Andrew Doan
The Nicene Creed
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father, Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic1 and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
1”catholic” means for all people, in all places, at all times.
Prayers of the People - Form 3
The Bible teaches us to pray for ourselves and others in various conditions and functions. The Leader and People pray responsively in Form 3
Father, we pray for Your holy catholic Church;
That we all may be one.
Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve You;
That Your Name may be glorified by all people.
We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons;
That they may be faithful ministers of Your Word and Sacraments.
We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world;
That there may be justice and peace on the earth.
Give us grace to do Your will in all that we undertake;
That our works may find favor in Your sight.
Have compassion on those who suffer from and grief or trouble;
That they may be delivered from their distress.
Give to the departed eternal rest;
Let light perpetual shine upon them.
We praise You for Your saints who have entered into joy;
May we also come to share in Your heavenly kingdom.
Let us pray for our own needs and those of others.
Include your personal intercessions & thanksgivings silently or aloud.
The Celebrant adds a concluding Collect prayer that “collects” the prayers in summary form.
Confession & Absolution We confess to God things done wrong, and things not done that should have been done.
Celebrant: Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.
Pause for silent confessing to God of anything that may be weighing upon you.
Minister and people:
Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of Your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in Your will, and walk in Your ways, to the glory of Your Name. Amen.
Celebrant: Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life.
People: Amen.
Passing of the Peace We greet one another and seek out anyone present with whom we are at odds with before coming to Holy Communion.
Celebrant The Peace of the Lord be always with you.
People And also with you.

Redeemed, how I love to proclaim it!
Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb;
Redeemed thro’ His infinite mercy,
His child, and forever, I am.
Chorus
Redeemed, redeemed,
Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb;
Redeemed, redeemed,
His child, and forever, I am.
Redeemed and so happy in Jesus,
No language my rapture can tell;
I know that the light of His presence
With me doth continually dwell. (

I think of my blessed Redeemer,
I think of Him all the day long;
I sing, for I cannot be silent;
His love is the theme of my song. (

I know I shall see in His beauty
The King in whose law I delight;
Who lovingly guardeth my footsteps,
and giveth me songs in the night. (

Eucharistic Prayer B
Celebrant: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Celebrant: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them to the Lord.
Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People: It is right to give Him thanks and praise.
Then the Celebrant proceeds:
It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to You, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.
Here a Proper Preface is said. Then the Celebrant continues
Therefore we praise You, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who forever say this hymn to proclaim the glory of Your Name:
Celebrant and People
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of Your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
The people stand or kneel.
Then the Celebrant continues
We give thanks to You, O God, for the goodness and love which You have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be Your people; in Your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, Your Son. For in these last days You sent Him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In Him, You have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before You. In Him, You have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.
On the night before He died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when He had given thanks to You, He broke it, and gave it to His disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of Me.”
After supper He took the cup of wine; and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is My Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of Me.”
Therefore, according to His command, O Father,
Celebrant and People
We remember His death,
We proclaim His resurrection,
We await His coming in glory;
The Celebrant continues
And we offer our sacrifice of praise, and thanksgiving to You, O Lord of all; presenting to You, from Your creation, this bread and this wine.
We pray You, gracious God, to send Your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and His Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to Your Son in His Sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through Him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under Your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with [NAME] and all Your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of Your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.
By Him, and with Him, and in Him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is Yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN
And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
People and Celebrant:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen
The Breaking of the Bread
The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread.
A period of silence is kept.
Celebrant: Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;

The Body of Christ, the bread of heaven. [Amen.]
[
The Blood of Christ, the cup of salvation. [Amen.] ]
Hymns & Songs may be sung by congregation while people receive Communion.
The Blood Will Never Lose Its Power” Hymnal #334
The blood that Jesus shed for me
‘Way back on Calvary,
The blood that gives me strength from day to day
It will never lose its pow’r.
Chorus
It reaches to the highest mountain;
It flows to the lowest valley.
The blood that gives me strength from day to day
It will never lose its pow’r.
It soothes my doubt and calms my fears,
And it dries all my tears;
The blood that give me strength from day to day
It will never lose its pow’r.

After Communion the Celebrant says
Let us pray.
Celebrant and People:
Almighty and everliving God, we thank You for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of Your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of Your Son, and heirs of Your eternal kingdom. And now, Father, send us out to do the work You have given us to do, to love and serve You as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To Him, to You, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.
The Bishop when present, or the Priest, may bless the people.
The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always. Amen.
Closing Hymn
We’re Marching To Zion” Hymnal #416
Come, we that love the Lord,
And let our joys be known.
Join in a song with sweet accord,
Join in a song with sweet accord,
And thus surround the throne,
And thus surround the throne.
Chorus
We’re marching to Zion,
Beautiful, beautiful Zion.
We’re marching upward to Zion,
The beautiful city of God.
Let those refuse to sing,
Who never knew our God;
But children of the heav’nly King,
But children of the heav’nly King
May speak their joys abroad,
May speak their joys abroad. (
Chorus)
The hill of Zion yields
A thousand sacred sweets
Before we reach the heav’nly fields,
Before we reach the heav’nly fields
Or walk the golden streets,
Or walk the golden streets. (C
horus)
Then let our songs abound,
And every tear be dry.
We’re marching thro’ Immanuel’s ground,
We’re marching thro’ Immanuel’s ground
To fairer worlds on high,
To fairer worlds on high. (
Chorus)
