The Nineteenth Sunday After Pentecost
Liturgy of the Word
Processional Hymns All stand. The people of God sang as they
approached the Temple for worship. The procession helps us remember that coming
into the presence of God is an extraordinarily special privilege.
“He Has Made Me Glad” Hymnal #214
“Ah, Lord God” Hymnal #149
The people standing, the
Celebrant says:
Celebrant The Lord be with you:
People And also with you.
Celebrant The earth is the Lord’s and all that is
in it:
People Let
the heavens rejoice and the earth be glad.
Celebrant I was glad when they said to me:
People Let
us go to the house of the Lord.
Celebrant Praise the Lord:
People The
name of the Lord be praised.
Celebrant Let us pray:
People Almighty
God, you bring to light things hidden in darkness, and know the shadows of our
hearts: Cleanse and renew us by your Spirit, that we may walk in the light and
glorify your name, through Jesus Christ, the Light of the world, Amen.
The Decalogue (Ten Commandments; Ex. 20:1-17)
Celebrant:
1And God spoke all these words, saying,
2I am the Lord
your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of
slavery. 3You shall have no other gods before me.
4You shall not make for yourself a carved
image, or any likeness of
anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is
in the water under the earth. 5You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I
the Lord your God am a jealous
God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the
fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who
love me and keep my commandments.
7You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who
takes his name in vain.
8Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9Six days you shall labor, and do all your
work, 10but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do
any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female
servant, or your
livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. 11For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and
all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the
Sabbath day and made it holy.
People: Lord, have mercy on us, and write these laws in our
hearts.
Celebrant:
12Honor your father and your mother, that
your days may be long in the land that the Lord
your God is giving you.
13You shall not murder.
14You shall not commit adultery.
15You shall not steal.
16You shall not bear false witness against
your neighbor.
17You shall not covet your neighbor’s house;
you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female
servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.
People: Lord, have mercy on us, and write these laws in our
hearts.
Gloria
Sung by all.
Glory
to God in the highest, and peace to His people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship You, we give You
thanks, we praise You for Your glory.
Lord
Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, You take away the
sin of the world: have mercy on us; You are seated at the right hand of the
Father: receive our prayers.
For
You alone are the Holy One, You alone are the Lord, You alone are the Most
High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
Celebrant: The
Lord be with you.
People: And also with
you.
Celebrant: Let
us pray.
Collect Prayer of the
Day Prayed by Celebrant. We
“collect” our acclamations,
corporately proclaim a
truth about God and ask His help in living out that truth.
First Reading Isaiah 25:1-9 (ESV)
1 O Lord, you
are my God;
I will exalt you; I will praise your name,
for you have done wonderful things,
plans formed of old, faithful and sure.
2 For you have made the city a heap,
the fortified city a ruin;
the foreigners' palace is a city no more;
it will never be rebuilt.
3 Therefore strong peoples will glorify you;
cities of ruthless nations will fear you.
4 For you have been a stronghold to the
poor,
a stronghold to the needy in his distress,
a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat;
for the breath of the ruthless is like a storm against a wall,
5 like heat in a dry
place.
You subdue the noise of the foreigners;
as heat by the shade of a cloud,
so the song of the ruthless is put down.
6 On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples
a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine,
of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined.
7 And he will swallow up on this
mountain
the covering that is cast over all peoples,
the veil that is spread over all nations.
8 He will swallow up
death forever;
and the Lord God will
wipe away tears from all faces,
and the reproach of his people he will take away
from all the earth,
for the Lord has
spoken.
9 It will be said on that day,
“Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him,
that he might save us.
This is the Lord;
we have waited for him;
let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.”
Reader: The
word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to
God.
Psalm 23 (ESV)
1 The Lord is
my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He makes me lie
down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
3 He restores
my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
for his name's sake.
4 Even though I walk through the valley
of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall
follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.
Second Reading Romans
13:1-14 (ESV)
1 Let every person be subject to the governing
authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist
have been instituted by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities
resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good
conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority?
Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, 4 for he is God's servant for your
good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain.
For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on
the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore
one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God's wrath but also for the
sake of conscience. 6 For because of this you also pay taxes, for the
authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing. 7 Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to
whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect
is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.
8 Owe no one anything, except to love each
other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. 9 For the commandments, “You shall not
commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not
covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall
love your neighbor as yourself.” 10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor;
therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
11 Besides this you know the time, that the
hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to
us now than when we first believed. 12 The night is far gone; the day is at hand.
So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the
armor of light. 13 Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in
orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in
quarreling and jealousy. 14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and
make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
Reader: The
word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to
God.
Sequence Hymn “Love Lifted Me” Hymnal #508
Gospel Reading
Matthew 22:1-14 (ESV)
Reader: The Holy
Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.
People: Glory to You, Lord
Christ.
1
And again Jesus spoke to them in
parables, saying, 2 “The
kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding feast for
his son, 3 and sent his servants to call
those who were invited to the wedding feast, but they would not come. 4 Again he sent other servants, saying,
‘Tell those who are invited, “See, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen
and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the
wedding feast.”’ 5 But they
paid no attention and went off, one to his farm, another to his business 6 while the rest seized his
servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them. 7 The king was angry, and he sent his troops
and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. 8 Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding
feast is ready, but those invited were not worthy. 9 Go therefore to the main roads and invite
to the wedding feast as many as you find.’ 10 And those servants went out into the roads
and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good. So the wedding hall
was filled with guests.
11 “But when the king came in to look at the
guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment. 12 And he said to him, ‘Friend, how did
you get in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. 13 Then the king said to the attendants,
‘Bind him hand and foot and cast him into the outer darkness. In that
place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ 14 For many are called, but few
are chosen.”
Reader: The
Gospel of the Lord.
People: Praise to You,
Lord Christ.
Sermon Fr.
Andrew Doan
Nicene Creed We respond to the Word of God read and
expounded by stating aloud an ancient form of confessing our belief.
We believe in one God, the Father, the
Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the
only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from
Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the
Father, Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came
down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the
Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius
Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in
accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the
right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and
the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord,
the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father
and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic1 and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for
the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life
of the world to come. Amen.
1”catholic” means for all
people, in all places, at all times

Me.”
People Amen.
His body was broken for us.

raising Him from death, and granting Him great honor at Your right hand on
high.
People Amen.
Jesus is Lord.

Let me never be separated from You.
Let me live and die in Your love. Amen.

of Your strength,
in the perfection of Your ways, and in the holiness of Your Spirit,
and rule over every hostile power within me in the might of Your Spirit,
and to the glory of Your Father. Amen.

Christ on His throne of glory in
