The Second Sunday of Advent
Prelude “I Love
You, Lord” The prelude helps us to
focus on where we are and why we are here. Quiet, meditative mood is
encouraged, prayerfully expelling mental
distractions.
Liturgy of the Word
Processional Hymns All stand. The people of God sang as they
approached the Temple for worship. The procession helps us remember that coming
into the presence of God is an extraordinarily special privilege. During this
hymn, the younger children are dismissed to attend Children’s Chapel

Amen. Lord have mercy.
You

Amen. Lord have mercy.
The Deacon or Celebrant then says
Let
us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.
Silence
may be kept.
We
confess to God things done wrong, and things not done that should have been done.
Minister and People
Most
merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against You in thought, word, and
deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved
You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are
truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have
mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in Your will, and walk in Your
ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.
The Bishop when present, or the Priest,
stands and says
Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great
mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance
and true faith turn unto him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from
all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting
life, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Trisagion (instead of Gloria)
Holy God! Holy Mighty One! Holy Immortal
One!
Have mercy on us!
Holy God! Holy Mighty One! Holy Immortal
One!
Have mercy on us!
Holy God! Holy Mighty One! Holy Immortal
One!
Have mercy on us and on the whole world!
Celebrant: The
Lord be with you.
People: And also with
you.
Celebrant: Let us pray.
Collect Prayer of the
Day Prayed by Celebrant. We
“collect” our acclamations, corporately proclaim a truth about God and ask His
help in living out that truth.
First Reading - Isaiah 40:1-11 (ESV)
1 Comfort, comfort my people, says your God.
2 Speak tenderly to Jerusalem,
and cry to her
that her warfare is ended,
that her iniquity is pardoned,
that she has received from the Lord's
hand
double for all her sins.
3 A voice cries:
“In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord;
make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
4 Every valley shall be lifted up,
and every mountain and hill be made low;
the uneven ground shall become level,
and the rough places a plain.
5 And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed,
and all flesh shall see it together,
for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”
6 A voice says, “Cry!”
And I said, “What shall I cry?”
All flesh is grass,
and all its beauty is like the flower of the
field.
7 The grass withers, the flower fades
when the breath of the Lord blows on it;
surely the people are grass.
8 The grass withers, the flower fades,
but the word of our God will stand forever.
9 Go on up to a high mountain,
O Zion, herald of good news;
lift up your voice with strength,
O Jerusalem, herald of good news;
lift it up, fear not;
say to the cities of Judah,
“Behold your God!”
Second Reading - 2 Peter 3:8-15a (ESV)
8 But do not overlook this one fact,
beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand
years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as
some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any
should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come
like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar,
and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the
works that are done on it will be exposed.
11 Since all these things are thus to be
dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and
godliness, 12 waiting for and hastening the coming of
the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved,
and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! 13 But according to his promise we are
waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness
dwells.
14 Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting
for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish,
and at peace. 15 And count the patience of our Lord as salvation.
Reader: The
word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to
God.
Sequence Hymn “O
Come, O Come, Emmanuel” Hymnal #245
(Sing the first 3 stanzas)
Gospel Reading Mark
1:1-8 (ESV)
Reader: The
Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark.
People: Glory to You,
Lord Christ.
1
The beginning of the
gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
2 As it is written in Isaiah the prophet,
“Behold, I send my
messenger before your face,
who will prepare your way,
3 the voice of one crying in the wilderness:
‘Prepare the way of the Lord,
make his paths straight,’”
4 John appeared, baptizing in the
wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the
forgiveness of sins. 5 And all the country of Judea and all
Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river
Jordan, confessing their sins. 6 Now John was clothed with camel's
hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts
and wild honey. 7 And he preached, saying, “After me
comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to
stoop down and untie. 8 I have baptized you with water,
but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
Reader: The
Gospel of the Lord.
People: Praise to You,
Lord Christ.
Sing the 4th stanza of “O Come, O Come,
Emmanuel” Hymnal #245
Sermon
Fr. Andrew Doan
Nicene Creed We respond to the Word of God read and
expounded by stating aloud an ancient form of confessing our belief.
We believe in one God, the Father, the
Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the
only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from
Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down
from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the
Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius
Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in
accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the
right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and
the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord,
the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father
and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic1 and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for
the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life
of the world to come. Amen.
1”catholic” means for all
people, in all places, at all times.
Prayers of the People
The Bible teaches us to
pray for ourselves and others in various conditions and functions. The Leader
and People pray responsively in Form 1.
Include your personal intercessions & thanksgivings silently or
aloud.
Deacon or other leader
With all our heart and with all our mind,
let us pray to the Lord, saying, “Lord, have mercy.”
For the peace of the world, for the
welfare of the holy Church of God, and for the unity of all peoples, let us
pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
For our Bishop, and for all the clergy and
people, let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
For our President, for the leaders of the
nations, and for all in authority, let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
For this city, for every city and
community, and for those who live in them, let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
For the good earth which God has given us,
and for the wisdom and will to conserve it, let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
For the aged and infirm, for the widowed
and orphans, and for the sick and the suffering, let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
For the poor and the oppressed, for the
unemployed and the destitute, for prisoners and captives, and for all who
remember and care for them, let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
For all who have died in the hope of the
resurrection, and for all the departed, let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
For deliverance from all danger, violence,
oppression, and degradation, let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
That we may end our lives in faith and
hope, without suffering and without reproach, let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
In the communion of all the saints, let us
commend ourselves, and one another, and all our life, to Christ our God.
To Thee, O Lord our God.
The Celebrant adds a
concluding Collect.
Passing of the Peace We greet one another and seek out anyone
present with whom we are at odds with before coming to Holy Communion.
Celebrant The
Peace of the Lord be always with you.
People And also with you.

has done for us by giving generously to the work of His church and towards the
furthering of His Kingdom.

Hymnal #416
Doxology Celebratory praise is appropriate for the ability God
provides us and the privilege of joining Him in His work.
Praise God from Whom all blessings flow.
Praise Him all creatures here below.
Praise Him above, Ye heavenly Host.
Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen.
Birthday Prayer (when needed): (Come to the altar rail
after the ushers bring forward the alms basins).
Many
happy returns of the day of thy birth, and may seasons of joy be given, and may
the dear Father prepare thee on earth for a glorious birthday in heaven. Amen.
The Great Thanksgiving
At the Last Supper, Jesus commanded His
disciples to remember Him in this fellowship “meal.”
People baptized in the Trinitarian form
who discern the presence of Jesus in the Bread and the Wine are welcome to
receive Holy Communion. A gluten free wafer is available upon request.
Eucharistic Prayer A
The people remain standing. The Celebrant,
whether bishop or priest, faces them and sings or says
The
Lord be with you.
People And also with
you.
Celebrant Lift up your hearts.
People We lift them to
the Lord.
Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People It is right to
give Him thanks and praise.
Then, facing the Holy Table, the Celebrant
proceeds
It
is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to
You, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.
Here a Proper Preface is sung or said on
all Sundays, and on other occasions as appointed.
Therefore
we praise You, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the
company of heaven, who forever say this hymn to proclaim the glory of Your
Name:
Celebrant and People
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and
might,
Heaven and earth are full [full] of Your glory.
Hosanna in the highest .
[Hosanna in the highest]
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna
in the highest. [Hosanna in the highest]
The people stand or kneel.
Then the Celebrant continues
Holy
and gracious Father: In Your infinite love You made us for Yourself; and, when
we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, You, in Your
mercy, sent Jesus Christ, Your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature,
to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to You, the God and Father of
all.
He
stretched out His arms upon the cross, and offered Himself, in obedience to
Your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.
At the following words concerning the
bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words
concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel
containing wine to be consecrated.
On
the night He was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took
bread; and when He had given thanks to You, He broke it, and gave it to his
disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do
this for the remembrance of Me.”
After
supper He took the cup of wine; and when He had given thanks, He gave it to
them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant,
which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you
drink it, do this for the remembrance
of Me.”
Therefore
we proclaim the mystery of faith:
Celebrant and People
Christ
has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.
The Celebrant continues
We
celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise
and thanksgiving. Recalling His death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer
You these gifts.
Sanctify
them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son,
the holy food and drink of new and unending life in Him. Sanctify us also that
we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve You in unity,
constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into
the joy of your eternal kingdom.
Spiritual Communion (said by all)
O Most blessed Savior,
in union with the faithful at every altar of Your Church
where Your blessed Body and Blood are being offered to the Father,
I desire to offer You praise and thanksgiving,
I present to You my soul and body with the earnest wish that I may
always be united to You.
I believe that You are truly present in
the Holy Sacrament.
And since I cannot now receive You sacramentally into my heart;
I unite myself to You and embrace You with all the affections of my soul.
Let me never be separated from You.
Let me live and die in Your love. Amen.
Come, Lord Jesus, and dwell in the fulness
of Your strength,
in the perfection of Your ways, and in the holiness of Your Spirit,
and rule over every hostile power within me in the might of Your Spirit,
and to the glory of Your Father. Amen.
Blessed, praised, and adored be Jesus
Christ on His throne of glory in
Heaven, and in the most Holy Sacrament of the Altar. Amen.
The celebrant continues
All
this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By Him, and with Him, and in Him, in
the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now
and for ever. AMEN.
And
now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
Celebrant and People
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be
thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give
us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those
who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from
evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever.
Amen.
The Breaking of the Bread
The Celebrant breaks the
consecrated Bread.
A period of silence is
kept.
Celebrant: Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;
People: Therefore let us
keep the feast.
O Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of
the world,
have mercy upon us.
O Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world,
have mercy upon us.
O Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world,
grant us Your peace.
The people join in
saying this prayer
We do not presume to come to this Your
Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your manifold
and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under
Your Table. But You are the same Lord whose property is always to have mercy.
Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of Your dear Son Jesus
Christ, and to drink His blood, that we may evermore dwell in Him, and He in
us. Amen.
Celebrant: The
Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died
for you, and feed on Him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

us strength and courage to love and serve You with gladness and singleness of
heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Bishop when present,
or the Priest, gives the blessing
The peace of God, which passes all
understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and
of His Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father,
the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always. Amen.
